To help you better understand the types of monitor mounts available, here are some things you should know and keep in mind.
Know this, before you jump in - some helpful notes
1. Mounting Methods: Free Standing vs. Desk Mount
Monitor arms can be either free standing, just sitting on top of your worksurface, or they can be mounted directly to your desk.
To attach a single post mounting system directly to your desk, a clamp mount or grommet mount is used. A clamp attaches to the outside edge of your worksurface. A grommet mount attaches to the desk through a hole on your worksurface.
2. Monitor Size and Weight Requirements
It’s important that you know the weight and dimensions of your monitors. Each monitor mount/stand has weight and size restrictions to prevent instability or damage to either the mounting system or the monitors. Before you buy, make sure your monitors fall within the mount’s size and weight requirements.
Note: Some manufacturers specify their monitor size requirements using the width measurement, instead of the diagonal measurement many of us are used to. So, a word to the wise, make sure to correctly measure your monitor (width or diagonal) based on the specific size requirements.
3. Is your monitor VESA compliant?
It’s important that you check if your computer monitor is VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) compliant.
VESA provides the guidelines for basic hole patterns that are used to make attaching a display to a mount much easier. These patterns are measures between the hole both vertically and horizontally. The most common VESA compliant hold dimensions are 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm (monitors weighing less than 30 lbs.).
To see if you’re monitor is VESA compatible, you can take a quick peek at the back of the monitor and look for the hole pattern. If it’s attached to an existing stand, you may need to remove the mount to reveal the hole pattern. Otherwise, an internet search of your monitor’s make and model should be able to help.
4. Monitor Configurations
You’ll notice that there are many different ways to arrange your monitors when using a desk mount or stand. This article will showcase the most popular configurations.
For those looking for a more unique monitor arrangement , you may need to look into finding a custom mounting system.
5. Adjustability Options and Features
There are various options and features when it comes to the adjustability of monitor arms and mounts. You can have a mount that’s either fixed or height adjustable. Some allow users to swivel or tilt their monitors. Others have articulating arms, making the extension from the mount to the monitor longer and making it possible to pull the monitor forward or push it back.
It can be a lot to take in. So, to prevent you from getting overwhelmed, we will not break down all the specific adjustment features. Instead, we will simply point out a few features of the examples shown below.
3 Monitor Stands / Mounts
When looking for a way to mount your 3 monitors, you have a choice between two different mounting styles and three different monitor configurations.
