How do I know what sit-stand table is right for me?

Written by Sue Schultz | 3/10/2022

You’ve heard all the buzz about sit-stand tables and are ready to experience the benefits yourself. However, because there are so many options, choosing one is difficult.

One of the first things to consider is what type of table adjustment method you prefer. Some height adjustment options are electric, counterbalance, gas, crank, or desktop converter. Your height adjustment method also influences the price of your sit-stand table. An electric sit stand table usually costs more than a manual crank height-adjustable table or desktop converter.

You may want to consider how often you plan to move your sit-stand table up or down. If you plan to adjust the height of your table several times a day, an electric height adjustable table may be right for you. A crank table may be better suited to your needs if you plan on leaving your table up or down for an extended period.

Here are some of the pros and cons of each type of sit-stand table:

Electric Height Adjustable

Pro – Fast height adjustment method usually includes a digital hand control with many manufacturers to choose from. Electric sit stand desks have greater lift capacity and are easy to operate.

Con – May require more cost investment. The table must be near an electrical source.

Counterbalance Height Adjustable

Pro – No power needed, can be placed anywhere. Tables feature quick height adjustment method with quiet operation.

Con - May require more cost investment.

 Gas Height Adjustable

Pro – No power needed, can be placed anywhere. Usually easy to operate and move around. They can be compact and fit into many environments.

Con – May have limited size and shape options. This table has less lifting capacity.

Crank Height Adjustable

Pro – No power needed, can be placed anywhere. Budget-friendly.

Con - Height adjustment method is manual and slower.

 Desk Top Converter

Pro – No need to purchase a new desk, converts your current fixed height desk into a sit-stand desk. Many manufacturers and options to choose from. Budget-friendly. Easy to assemble.

Con – Smaller workspace and takes up a lot of space on your current desk. May lack cable management.

Other things to consider when reviewing different types of sit-stand tables from various manufacturers:

  • Height adjustment speed
  • Lift capacity
  • Height range
  • Ease of use
  • Size, shape, and colors available
  • What kind of material are the top and frame made from?
  • How long the company has been in business
  • Warranty
  • Stability
  • Price

There is a wide selection of quality and price of sit-stand desks from manufacturers. Keep in mind that high price doesn’t necessarily equal high quality. We all have unique environments, requirements and budget considerations – one option certainly does not fit all.
